Industry Minister urges relevant parties to prepare for the AEC

BANGKOK, September 8 (TNA) - In view of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, Thai Industry Minister Dr. Wannarat Charnnukul on Thursday urged all parties concerned to prepare for influxes of substandard products and foreign workers into the kingdom.
Dr. Wannarat suggested Thai businesses first improve their productivity, reduce costs, and implement technical standards for all locally-made industrial goods.
On investment, he said the Thai government should draw up plans to protect key industries while stimulating foreign investments, in order to spur local innovation and production of high-tech, eco-friendly products.
However, on labour, he said it was likely for skilled workers in the Thai production sector, such as engineers, to seek better job prospects overseas amid the inflow of lower-paid workers from abroad--a scenario which could hurt low-end Thai workers.
To this extent, he said he would work closely with the labour and education ministries to monitor the situation. (TNA)
