Thailand's rice mortgage scheme to kick off October 2011

BANGKOK, September 8 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Kittirat Na-Ranong said on Thursday that his Pheu Thai Party-led government will launch its rice mortgage scheme next month, aimed to raise income for local farmers.
Kittirat told reporters that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will chair a meeting of the National Rice Policy Committee on Friday to discuss detailed principles of the new rice mortgage scheme, prior to its implementation on October 7.
Kittirat revealed that local farmers will be allowed to unlimitedly mortgage their rice yields with the new government at prices reasonably set above their costs of production.
The deputy premier said that the new government will work together with all parties concerned to prevent any flaw or corruption emerging from the rice mortgage scheme, which he insisted, will solely benefit local farmers in the form of their increased income, not the local private sector or any particular group of people.
