SRT urged to speed up on high-speed train projects

BANGKOK, September 8 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Transport Minister Chatt Kuldiloke has ordered the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to speed up its implementation of high-speed train projects on four routes linking Bangkok to four major provinces namely Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Rayong and Hua Hin.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Chatt said he expected the railroad design to be ready in six months to pave way for construction work to be completed in three years. He also said the SRT would be responsible for seeking financial support for the projects.

Chatt noted that the high-speed railway network would require the construction of standardized 1.43-meter-wide tracks like in neighbouring countries to enable Thailand to link up with the regional railway network.

In updated reports, SRT executives said they had approved the projects, and would forward details to the cabinet in order to request funding from the 2012 fiscal budget. (TNA)
