Thai farmers demand flood compensation

BANGKOK, September 8 (TNA) - Rice farmers have demanded that the Thai government speed up its compensation hand-outs to owners of flood damaged crops.

Wichian Phuanglamchiak, head of a rice farmers’ group in Ayutthaya province, issued the demand on Wednesday, saying farmers had been deeply troubled from the latest flood crisis. He noted some farmers had even resorted to harvest their rice earlier after half of their paddies had been inundated.

Wichian also said he preferred the new government’s rice mortgage scheme than the Democrat Party’s farmer income guarantee scheme, which he claimed had been ineffective in offsetting farmers’ losses. He pointed that the scheme only covered claims for crop damage caused by flooding, drought and cold weather, but excluded damages from pests.

He added that the government should give more aid to rice farmers like in Japan and Vietnam. (TNA)
