Thailand's sales of gasohol and ethanol drop
BANGKOK, September 8 (TNA) - Domestic sales of gasohol 95 and ethanol have fallen over the past couple of weeks, in the wake of the new Thai government's decision on reducing retail prices of the premium and regular gasoline, or benzene 95 and 91, with immediate effect.
Siriwuth Siamphakdi, President of the Thai Ethanol Manufacturing Association, said on Wednesday that the sale volume of gasohol 95 has dropped by some 15-20 per cent since the cut of the premium and regular gasoline prices, or about 700,000-800,000 litres a day.
Siriwuth acknowledged that the sale volume of ethanol has also fallen by 70,000-80,000 litres a day so far, cautioning that the reduced gasoline prices, if prolonged more than one year, will affect sales of tapioca, sugarcane and other economic crops used as raw materials for the country's ethanol production.
Siriwuth revealed that his association is assessing impacts on domestic sales of gasohol 91 as well, following the reduced prices of the premium and regular gasoline.
The Thai Ethanol Manufacturing Association chief said that his association has exported more ethanol to overseas importers, including Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines as part of its solutions to a drop in the domestic ethanol sales, noting that Thailand's exports of ethanol totaled 53.3 million liters in the first half of this year.
Meanwhile, the Thai Ethanol Manufacturing Association is scheduled to hold a meeting this afternoon with other three agencies concerned, including the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Thai Tapioca Trade Association and Petro Green Company Limited, to discuss impacts from the reduced gasoline prices on the domestic market, with agreed proposals to be soon submitted to new Thai Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan for further consideration and action.
