Flood troubles continue in Thailand
BANGKOK, September 8 (TNA) - Ailing flood conditions have continued in the Thailand’s north, northeast and central plains, with the crisis now expanding to more areas.
In Phichit province, flooding had remained in Sam Ngam’s Rangnok Sub-district for over two months, affecting over 1,000 families. Floodwaters there continued to rise due to runoffs from Sukhothai and Phitsanulok Provinces and extended showers in the area.
The water level in Muang Prachin Buri municipality had reached nearly 50 centimeters deep with no sign of receding. Local disaster-response officials said floodwaters had remained due to flooding in areas surrounding the municipality.
In other updates, the flood crisis had spread to more northeastern provinces this week. Officials in Roi Et Province’s At Sa-mart District said they had begun surveying flood damages to speed up the delivery of needed assistance.
In Kalasin province, over 80 square kilometers of farmland had also been damaged from extended showers and discharges from the Lam Pao Dam.
Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha meanwhile, said during his trip to Nakhon Si Thammarat and Ranong provinces, that army troops had been deployed to provide flood assistance around the clock. He assured they would be the first group of rescuers to reach flood victims.
However, General Prayuth warned that the flood situation in ten low-lying central provinces could become worse due to the northern runoff. (TNA)
