Thai Government proposed to amend amnesty bill for "Thaksin"

BANGKOK, September 6 (TNA) - Former Thai Parliament president Chai Chidchob proposed on Tuesday that the new Pheu Thai Party-led government amend the country's amnesty bill to pardon convicted ex-Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, rather than rewriting a single Article of the 2007 Constitution for the same purpose.

In response to pro-Pheu Thai-government red-shirt people's demand for progress in their move to seek a royal pardon for Thaksin, initiated in 2009, Chai, who is also a former House speaker, acknowledged that an amnesty for Thaksin, who was sentenced to a two-year imprisonment in 2008, is possible, citing previous amnesty cases as examples, including those for a former politician and pro-democracy leader, Veerakan Musikapong, and for capital punishment prisoners.

Chai, now a list MP of the opposition Bhumjaithai Party, insisted, however, that the new Thai government should amend the country's amnesty bill and seek a parliamentary approval of the amended law to pardon Thaksin, rather than setting up a new constitutional assembly to rewrite only a single Article of the 2007 Constitution for the same purpose, in order to save the state budget.

The former Thai Parliament president also voiced his opposition to a demand that Thaksin be jailed before being pardoned, saying he considers being globally-defamed for corruption is a more severe penalty for the convicted ex-Thai premier than the two-year jail term and Thaksin's case should be legally settled eventually for the sake of national reconciliation.
