Ministry eyes Bt8 billion in rehabilitation funds for Thai south

BANGKOK, September 9 (TNA) - The Ministry of Justice will seek an 8-billion-baht budget to remedy insurgency victims in southern Thai border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat, and Pattani.
Justice Minister Police General Pracha Promnok said Monday the budget would also seek aid for people affected by the political turmoil from the late 1997 constitution.
Pol Gen Pracha reassured that government compensation would be given as promised although the exact amount had yet been determined. He said the proposed budget would soon be forwarded to the government’s rehabilitation committee for its approval.
Meanwhile, the justice minister commented on a prison riot that broke out Monday morning at Pattani central prison, saying that problems mostly come from over congestion.
He said an order had been made for the Corrections Department Director-General Chartchai Suthiklom and the Pattani governor to work on calming tensions in the compound ahead of his meeting with the prison governor. (TNA)
