Man in custody after Melbourne hit-run
+A 31-year-old man is under police guard in hospital after a hit-and-run incident on Saturday night that left another man fighting for his life.
Police revealed the breakthrough in the case after the accident at Deer Park in Melbourne's west on Saturday night.
A silver Nissan Dualis four-wheel-drive vehicle collided head-on with a sedan as it tried to overtake another vehicle on Tilburn Road, at about 8pm (AEST) on Saturday, police said.
The driver of the sedan, a 24-year-old Sydenham man, is in critical condition in The Alfred hospital.
Police said the driver of the 4WD absconded from the scene after being picked up by a friend and a 24-year-old woman from nearby Preston was helping them with their inquiries.
The Dualis was reported stolen on August 31 and physical evidence left in the car helped them to identify the driver, police said.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brad McArthur described the hit-and-run as particularly callous given the victim was left fighting for his life.
"It just beggars belief to think that somebody could be involved in a crash like this where obviously someone has suffered some serious injuries and their life is at risk and they're prepared to jump in another vehicle and run away from responsibility," Det Sen Sgt McArthur said.
The family of the man left fighting for his life endured a horror Father's Day at his bedside.
