BMA closely monitors flood situation

BANGKOK, September 4 (TNA) - Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is preparing for potential flooding as high tide and upstream water is approaching the capital city.

BMA’s Drainage and Sewerage Department Sunday ordered its officials to be prepared for possible flooding overnight and to closely monitor the amount of rainfall and levels of upstream water flowing into Chao Phraya River, noting that incessant rain Saturday night had raised the level of the river by 40 centimeters to 1.84 meters above the average sea level.

The department said in its statement that riverside people whose households are located in areas within flood-prevention dykes should be relatively safe from flooding as the dykes are 2.50-meter tall but warned people living beyond the floodwalls to monitor the level of the river closely.

Meanwhile, flooding situation in Phichit Province became worrisome as floodwater from overflowing Nan River inundated the Phichit Railway Station and nearby areas, making local roads impassable for a vehicle of any type. Railway officials had to erect sandbag dykes to protect the railway track from floodwater and create pathways for train passengers.

In Nakhon Sawan Province, the water level of Chao Phraya River kept rising, having already increased by eight centimeters from yesterday level. Upstream water from the Nan River also swelled Bung Boraphet Lake and flooded part of Tha Tako District’s Phanomset Sub-District. (TNA)
