Salary hike to be proposed for Thai civil servants

BANGKOK, September 3 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Finance Minister Wirun Techapaiboon says that his ministry will submit a plan on raising salaries for low-income civil servants to 15,000 baht a month to the Thai Cabinet for further consideration within two weeks, noting that the scheme is expected to take effect by January 1, 2012.
Wirun acknowledged that more than 649,300 Thai civil servants now earn monthly salaries below 15,000 baht, about neatly 346,360 are bachelor’s degree holders and the rest have lower educational qualifications.
Under the new salary hike plan, to be funded by a 26-billion-baht state budget, bachelor’s degree holders will earn additional cost-of-living allowances to raise their salaries to 15,000 baht a month. Civil servants earning fixed salaries and allowances below 9,000 baht a month will also receive additional cost-of-living allowances to raise their salaries to 9,000 baht a month, while those earning 15,000-20,000 baht a month will be eligible for other forms of allowances.
Regarding the new government's first-home project, the deputy finance minister said that the Pheu Thai Party-led administration, through the Government Housing Bank (GHB), will provide a soft loan with first-three-year zero-per cent-interest rate for first-time homebuyers across the country; while the Revenue Department will also consider additional tax reductions for them.
