Ex-Thai Deputy PM asked to clarify secret talks with Cambodia

BANGKOK, September 2 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul is asking former deputy premier Suthep Thaugsuban to clarify his alleged secret talks with Cambodia on an overlapping maritime area.

Surapong said on Friday Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had ordered him to personally investigate the case, in which he would also write to the Cambodian government to inquire on the matter.

In response to the allegations, former premier Abhisit Vejjajiva admitted he had assigned Suthep to supervise the nation’s maritime interests, but claimed the role had ended as soon as Cambodia appointed former premier Thaksin Shinawatra as its adviser.

Meanwhile, the new Thai foreign minister was due to visit Cambodia on September 14 when was expected to discuss help for Weera Somkwamkid and Ratree Pipatanapaiboon, the two Thai people who had been jailed in Cambodia since late last year. (TNA)
