Flood crisis expanding in many Thai provinces
BANGKOK, September 2 (TNA) - The flood crisis in Thailand is expanding in many provinces, especially those along the Chao Phraya River where water levels are rapidly rising.
On Friday, the Chao Phraya River in Nakhon Sawan Province measured only one meter short of overflowing its dykes. Floodwaters had remained across Muang Nakhon Sawan District, and inundated over 20 square kilometers of farmland. Two schools had so far been closed.
In Ang Thong Province, the water level in the Chao Phraya Dam measured a rise of 15 centimeters on Friday morning, while in the northeastern province of Yasothon, at least 885 villages had been declared as disaster areas, affecting over 200,000 people and some 270 square kilometers of farmland.
In other updates, Secretary-General of the Thai Red Cross Society Paen Wannamethi, delivered 1,000 royal aid packages to flood victims in Chai Nat Province on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.
Acting Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and other key Democrat members also visited flood victims in Sukhothai Province. They assured their previous Democrat-led cabinet had allocated over 1 billion baht in flood assistance funds, saying it should suffice mitigation efforts for rest of this fiscal year. (TNA)
