Thailand's insurance business to grow some 16% in first half 2011

BANGKOK, September 2 (TNA) - Thailand's insurance business is likely to grow by some 16 per cent year-on-year this year, worth over 490 billion baht, cushioned by its expansion of over 13 per cent year-on-year during the first half.

Chantra Buranarisha, Secretary-General of Thailand's Office of Insurance Commission (OIC), said on Friday that the value of the country's insurance business stood at 223 billion baht in the January-June 2011 based on overall 39 million insurance policies.

Chantra acknowledged that most of the insurance policies during the first half of this year, worth 154 billion baht, were life insurance with its 12 per cent year-on-year growth; while another part, worth 68 billion baht, were insurance against losses, a 15 per cent year-on-year expansion.

The OIC chief said she, therefore, believes that Thailand's overall insurance business will grow by some 16 per cent year-on-year this year, worth over 490 billion baht.

Meanwhile, OIC is organising "the insurance week" fair at the Challenger Hall 2-3 of the IMPACT Trade and Exhibition Centre in Muang Thong Thani on the outskirts of Bangkok from September 2-4 to promote more awareness on the importance and benefits of insurance businesses, during which insurance policies with special accounts of up to some 30 per cent were offered, as well as other community-based and brand named consumer products with specially-quoted prices, including anti-knock helmets.
