Typhoon Talas to affect several Thai areas
BANGKOK, September 2 (TNA) - The Thai government's Emergency Operation Centre for Floods, Storms and Landslides (EOC) warned on Friday that people in areas at risk in the country's northern, northeastern, eastern and central regions should beware of more torrential downpours with possible flash floods and landslides over the next couple of days, influenced by Typhoon Talas.
Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary for Interior Chonchuen Bunyanusat told reporters after chairing an EOC meeting that the new critical period would be September 4-7 with the disaster-prone areas including hillsides and low-lying zones.
Chonchuen revealed that a new sub-committee in charge of preventing and addressing flood-related problems in the country is likely to be set up at the first meeting of a commanding committee on the management of floods, storms and landslides, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit on Friday afternoon.
The senior Thai official also warned people who plan to fly to Japan to closely follow up the weather updates during the Typhoon Talas-influenced period.
Meanwhile, the EOC reported that floods have now remained in 43 districts of nine provinces, including Sukhothai, Pichit, Pitsanulok, Nakhon Sawan, Ayutthaya, Angthong, Chainat, Singburi and Ubon Ratchathani, affecting more than 119,600 households in nearly 1,850 villages. (TNA)
