ATO stops $220m in dodgy tax claims
The boss of the Australian Tax Office (ATO) has reminded taxpayers that anyone that tries to cheat the system will be caught, saying $220 million of dodgy claims have been found in the past two months.
Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo says since July 1 the ATO has stopped over 70,000 possibly fraudulent refund cheques being sent out.
"If you try and cheat the system - it is not a matter if we will find you, but when," he said in statement.
"We are constantly increasing our sophisticated technical and relationship networks to close the net on those doing the wrong thing."
He said taxes fund the lifestyle Australians enjoy, including vital community and government services.
"Those who do the wrong thing burden the vast majority of the community who do the right thing and who properly fulfil their civic and legal responsibilities."
