Zardari vows to wipe out "cancer" of terrorism from Pakistan

Rezaul H. Laskar
Islamabad, Sep 21 (PTI) Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari Sunday vowed to eliminate the "cancer" of terrorism from the country after the deadly suicide attack at the luxury Marriott Hotel here killed 60 people and injured 260.

"Terrorism is an epidemic, a cancer inside Pakistan that
we will wipe out," Zardari said in a brief address to the
nation aired by state-run PTV at 2 am Sunday morning before he
departed for the U.S. to participate in the U.N. General
Assembly.

The attack Saturday night came hours after Zardari said
in his maiden address to a joint sitting of both houses of
parliament that the government was determined to root out
terrorism and vowed that terrorists would not be allowed to
use the Pakistani soil to launch attacks against any country.

In his early morning address, Zardari said terrorists had
struck just as the country was celebrating the ushering in of
democracy and asked Pakistanis to "make your pain your
strength" as the government combated terrorism.

He appealed to "all democratic forces to come forward and
save Pakistan" and to help in efforts to bring the
perpetrators of the attack to justice so that they could be
awarded the strongest punishment.

"We will not be afraid of these cowards. We will not fear
these cowardly attacks. Pakistan is a fearless and steadfast
nation. We Pakistanis believe that our death is in the hands
of Allah and we do not fear dying," Zardari said.

"Death will come one day but Inshallah (god willing), we
will purify Pakistan of this cancer. The day will come when
all these people (terrorists) will bow before you," he added.

"Pakistan is ours and we will save it," Zardari said,
adding that no Muslim could carry out such an attack during
the holy month of Ramzan. "Those who are shedding the blood of
Muslims in Pakistan are not Muslims. No religion allows them
to indulge in such acts," he said.

Zardari also said he know well the pain and anguish that
acts of terrorism bring as he had experienced the
assassination of his wife, former premier Benazir Bhutto, in a
suicide attack last year.

"We in the Pakistan People's Party have buried many of
our friends. I have myself buried Bibi (Bhutto)," he said.

"To the sisters who lost their brothers and the children
whose fathers died, I would like to say that I am there for
them. The government of Pakistan will take care of you," he
said.

Zardari left with an official delegation, which included
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, for New York Sunday
morning to participate in the U.N. General Assembly. PTI
