Appointment of Thailand's new national police chief expected by mid-September

BANGKOK, September 1 (TNA) - New Thai Deputy Prime Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yubumrung, who oversees the Royal Thai Police, said on Thursday that he expects the official procedure to appoint Thailand's new national police chief will be completed by mid-September 2011.
Police Captain Chalerm revealed that he plans to propose three nominees for the Royal Thai Police's top job, to replace incumbent National Police Chief Police Genera Wichean Potephosree, for Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to choose, saying that the trio include Police General Priewpan Damapong, an elder brother of Khunying Pojaman na Pombejra, the ex-wife of exiled ex-Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Police General Pansiri Prapawat and Police General Panupong Singhara na Ayutthaya, all of them are now Deputies National Police Chief.
The new Thai deputy premier noted that Police General Wichean is a prudent person and good at planning, but not at crime suppression; so, the outgoing national police chief appears to better suit for the post of secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC) than permanent secretary for tourism and sports.
Earlier, Police General Wichean said that he had agreed to resign as the national police chief, but he wants a new position suitable for his abilities and status. (TNA)
