Thailand’s economy to see an extra 2.5% increment: Commerce Minister

BANGKOK, August 31 (TNA) - Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Kittirat Na Ranong says the government’s economic stimulus policies, including the 300-baht daily minimum wage policy, will make the Thai economy grow faster by at least 2.5 percent next year.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kittirat made the prediction on the Thai economy, besides commenting further on the wage hike policy, in which he said, many companies, including those listed under the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) have already voiced support for.

Kittirat admitted, however, that Small and Medium Enterprises will still need more time to adjust themselves to the wage policy. He promised that the government will help them reduce their operational costs with tax measures, among others.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Prime Minister defended the government’s rice mortgage policy in response to criticism that it will make Thai rice uncompetitive on the global market by raising its price, saying that it is a short-term policy intended to help the grassroots people. He noted that once the rice price is stabilized and farmers have enough income, they will find no need to mortgage their rice. (TNA)
