Over 1,000 S. Koreans imprisoned overseas: report

SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- More than 1,000 South Koreans are kept in jail in foreign countries for murder, gambling and other crimes, the Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

The ministry said in a report that a total of 1,202 South Koreans remained in
prison in foreign countries at the end of June, of whom 476 were in Japan, 226 in
the United States and 202 in China.
By type of crime, 192 South Koreans were charged with murder, 153 with drug
smuggling, 124 with robbery, it said.
"More efforts should be done to provide legal help to South Koreans in foreign
countries," Rep. Park Sun-young of the conservative Liberty Forward Party said.
