National police chief calls for justice
BANGKOK, August 31 (TNA) - Thailand's incumbent National Police Chief Police General Wichean Potephosee said on Wednesday that he will heed his superiors' opinions and the government's order, calling, however, for justice, following reports on his soon removal from the Royal Thai Police's top job.
Police General Wichean told reporters that he will have no objection to his transfer to a new equivalent post suitable for him and his status, as he has not lapsed in his duty and he, therefore, deserves a fair reassignment.
Earlier, new Thai Deputy Prime Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yubumrung criticised the incumbent national police chief over spreading narcotics and several illegal casinos in the country, saying that it should be clear within one week whether Police General Wichean would be replaced. The newly-appointed deputy premier also claimed that it should now be time to ensure justice for incumbent Deputy National Police Chief Police General Priewpan Damapong, the elder brother of Khunying Potjaman Na Pombejra, the ex-wife of exiled ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was unfairly transferred after Thailand's military coup in September 2006.
Meanwhile, former Democrat deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban acknowledged that the appointment of any national police chief needs to be officially approved by the Royal Thai Police board and any appointee to the Royal Thai Police's top post under a prime ministerial order needs, in the meantime, to be acting national police chief.
