ASEAN free trade may affect Thai workers in the service sector
BANGKOK, August 31 (TNA) - The free flow of labor in Southeast Asia to be introduced by the ASEAN Community in 2015 is feared to trouble Thai workers in service, tourism and hotel businesses.
An official from the Department of Trade Negotiations, Narong Poonpipat, raised the concern on Wednesday at a seminar on labor free flow mitigation, hosted by the Department of Skills Development.
Speaking at the seminar, Narong said he expected the liberalization of services and investments in the ASEAN Community to pose negative impacts on Thai workers, particularly in the sectors of tourism, communications, transportation, retail, education, finance and health.
Meanwhile, Director for Labor Development Research at the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI), Associate Professor Yongyuth Chalaemwong, dismissed any immediate setback on Thai workers, reasoning that although ASEAN member countries have already adopted Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRA) for several professions, the language factor will put off foreign job-seekers.
