Bangkok to enforce alcohol-free zones in government offices, public spaces

BANGKOK, August 31 (TNA) - Alcohol-free zones will be enforced in government offices and parks in Bangkok starting from October 1 this year, in fresh efforts to expedite the new government’s priority of narcotic suppression.

A memorandum of understanding for the enforcement was signed Wednesday between Permanent Secretary for Public Health Doctor Narong Sahametapat, Chief of Police Inspector General Police Major General Somkid Boontanom, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Doctor Peerapong Saichua, under which state offices and public spaces across 50 Bangkok districts, including metropolitan police stations and parks, will be listed as alcohol-free zones under the Alcohol Beverage Control Act B.E. 2551.

Doctor Narong said the MOU will limit the sales, marketing and consumption of alcoholic drinks only to licensed shops or clubs, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and from 5 p.m. to midnight, and will prohibit sales to individuals below 20 years of age.

The MOU stipulates a maximum six-month jail term and/or a 10,000 baht fine for offenders selling or drinking in alcohol-free zones, a maximum one-year jail term and/or a 500,000 baht fine for those holding marketing campaigns, a maximum two-year jail term and/or a 4,000 baht fine for sales of alcoholic drinks beyond permitted hours, and a maximum one-year jail term and/or a 20,000 baht fine for sales to individuals below 20 years of age.
