Thailand's floods remain critical in downstream areas

BANGKOK, August 31 (TNA) - Heavy floods have remained in Thailand's downstream areas in the lower northern and central regions, as local authorities have been on alert to provide immediate assistance to people in the affected zones around the clock.
In Bang Rakam District of Pitsanulok Province, more than 100 households in 99 villages of 11 sub-districts have been hit by the critical floods and have evacuated to roadsided shelters, as the overflowing Yom River has been measured over two metres above its banks.
The provincial governor has ordered agencies concerned, particularly police officers, to take care of the temporarily-displaced flood victims and their assets, as the flooding situation in the province will likely worsen in the coming days due to torrential downpours coupled with flows of water from Sukhothai Province and other upstream areas.
In Inburi District of the central Singburi Province and other low-lying western areas of the Chao Phraya River, where inundations have also been critical, local people have evacuated to highlands and have closely monitored the flooding situation day by day, as advised by the provincial governor, who has also instructed agencies concerned to immediately dispatch needed assistance to the local flood victims.
