SBY SHOULD NOT SEEK REELECTION : YOUNG PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANT
Pandeglang, Banten, Sept 20 (ANTARA) - A political commentator with presidential ambitions, Rizal Mallarangeng, said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) should not run for reelection in 2009 because by then he would be too old , 65 years.
"SBY had better give younger figures an opportunity to lead the nation ," Mallarangeng said in a dialog with youths in Menes sub district, Pandeglang district, on Saturday.
According to the brother of presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng, if they were wise, the present leaders would give members of the younger generation capable of providing better national leadership a chance to take over the helm of government.
"This would be of great merit in terms of political education," he said.
He said, so far, it had appeared SBY was intent on serving a second term as president although his performance was "not optimal."
"I think, SBY has not been able to develop this nation as fast as expected," Mallarangeng said, adding infrastructure development had not taken place at optimum speed, the unemployment and poverty rates were still high , the economy and education were still in dire straits.
"Perhaps the systems are already good but in terms of implementation things do not happen fast," he said, noting that Indonesia was lagging far behind China which was able to attain an economic growth rate of 10 percent a year compared to Indonesia's economic growth rate of 6 percent.
"I suggest, SBY be content with serving as president for only one term," Mallarangeng said.
He affirmed he was seriously preparing himself to join the presidential race in 2009.
