Farmers urged to harvest rice ahead of possible flooding

BANGKOK, August 30 (TNA) - Thai farmers in the low-lying Chao Phraya River basin are warned to quickly harvest their rice as substantial runoffs are expected in the next 3-5 days.

Deputy Director General of the Irrigation Department Weera Wongsaengnak issued the warning on Tuesday, saying the northern run-off has been flowing more rapidly into Nakhon Sawan Province’s Chum Saeng District, raising water levels across the Yom, Nan and Ping River basins.

He warned farmers living along Chao Phraya River basin in three provinces of Ang Thong, Singburi, and Ayutthaya, to harvest their crops before September 10, before the influx of water from Nakhon Sawan Province.

The Deputy Director General of the Irrigation Department also said the amount of water in the Chao Phraya Dam on Tuesday was measured at 1,931 million cubic metres, showing a daily increase of some 10-15 centimetres. He expected within 2-3 days, the amount of water will reach 2,100 million cubic metres, or an increase of some 50 centimetres.

Weera said as long as the water level in the river stays under 3,000 million cubic metres, Bangkok will be safe from floods. However, he advised that the water situation be closely monitored until the end of September’s monsoon. (TNA)
