Thailand to materialise dual train system in four years

BANGKOK, August 30 (TNA) - Thailand's newly-appointed Deputy Transport Minister Police Lieutenant General Chatt Kuldiloke announced Tuesday that his ministry will urgently materialise the country's dual train system over the next four years.

Police Lieutenant General Chatt told reporters, after having been assigned by new Transport Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol Suwanatat to oversee the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), that Thailand has mostly relied on road transport so far, resulting in higher transport costs compared with those in neighbouring countries.

Police Lieutenant General Chatt acknowledged that the new dual train development project, once completed, will significantly support and upgrade Thailand's logistics and land transportation networks beneficial to local business operators in terms of reduced costs.

The new deputy transport minister, who has also been tasked with the Department Of Rural Roads and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), said that he will carry on the dust-free-roads project launched by the previous Thai administrations, and that it is now likely that his ministry will choose a rental deal for acquiring new 4,000-natural-gas-for-vehicle (NGV)-engineered public buses to serve the city's passengers, rather than a lease agreement, to avoid the BMTA's heavy burden to take care of the leased bus fleet, at its own costs, when its lease period expires.
