Fanning out at Teahupoo
There was high drama as Australia's former world surfing champion Mick Fanning was sent packing in the third round of the Billabong Pro Tahiti in three-metre waves at Teahupoo.
Fanning's defeat completed the exit of the world's top five riders with No.2 Jordy Smith losing a controversial third-round re-surf after suffering suspected broken ribs.
Trailing by just two points and with only a couple of minutes remaining, Fanning, the world No.4, pulled into a nice barrel and looked set for a big score.
But as he emerged from the tube, Freddy Patacchia, who had priority for the next wave, dropped-in on the Australian.
Fanning knew that under the rules he could be called for interference if the Hawaiian caught the wave, so he bailed out to avoid getting in Patacchia's way but it was too late and the pair came very close to colliding before the American also fell off.
Judges had no choice but to call interference against Fanning and his wave wasn't scored.
In the end Fanning could only manage a 7.93 and a 2.67 for a combined total of 10.60 while Patacchia landed a 3.77 and a 8.77 for a narrow win.
The Gold Coast surfer shook hands with Patacchia after the heat before quickly making his way from the channel on a jet ski.
World No.32 Patacchia said he felt terrible dropping-in on Fanning but admitted he had no option.
"I knew there wasn't a lot of waves and that he was going to get one more chance for a score," Patacchia said.
"It made me feel sick to my stomach doing it but I just knew that if I'd be inside enough and that if I saw it close out on him I could dart out and get priority ... if it looked like he was going to make it I just knew I'd have to drop in on him.
"I didn't want to run into him ... I knew what had to be done I had priority and time was running out."
Despite Australia's top guns Fanning and world No.1 Joel Parkinson bowing out, the Aussies are still well-represented in the quarterfinals.
Gold Coast surfer Josh Kerr has been in brilliant form at Teahupoo and goes up against the man of the moment, Frenchman Jeremy Flores, who became just the third surfer in history to score two perfect 10's in a heat.
NSW Central Coast Matt Wilkinson, who landed one of four ten-pointers on Sunday (Monday AEST), goes up against three-time Teahupoo winner Kelly Slater in the second quarter-final heat.
South Africa's Travis Logie takes on American Brett Simpson before Lennox Head's Owen Wright, who also scored a ten on Sunday, clashes with Brazil's Raoni Monteiro.
Logie was beaten by fellow South African Smith in round three before judges ordered a re-surf.
Time was called off during the heat, when Logie was leading, because Smith injured his ribs.
Water patrol informed the contest director an ambulance was required and Smith was taken to shore for treatment.
However, Smith regathered and surfed out the heat and beat Logie on his last wave before a protest was lodged.
