Thailand destroys pirated products worth over Bt3 billion

BANGKOK, August 29 (TNA) - Thailand's Ministry of Commerce on Monday showcased the destroying of over 1.3 million pirated products with a combined tag price worth over 3.1 billion baht.
Deputy Commerce Minister Siriwat Kachornprasart chaired over the event in Bangkok, witnessed by foreign envoys of the United States and the European Union.
Siriwat said that the demonstration will show the international community the determination of the Thai government and private sector to suppress counterfeit activities in the country.
Siriwat said this was the second time that the Department of Intellectual Property, the Royal Thai Police Office, the Special Branch Police, the Metropolitan Police Bureau, the Customs Department, the Department of Special Investigation, and intellectual property owners jointly conducted the anti-piracy showcase this year. The first display was held in southern Thailand’s Phuket Province, at which about 93,000 counterfeit goods, worth some 58 million baht, were destroyed.
The deputy commerce minister believed that with serious government suppression, the United States will remove Thailand from its priority watch list (PWL), on which Thailand has been relegated to in the last two years.
Siriwat said the Department of Intellectual Property will continue enforcing the laws and pushing for the passage of an intellectual property bill envisaged during the previous administration. (TNA)
