Thai PM seeks to implement “Bang Rakam Model” to battle floods nationwide
BANGKOK, August 28 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sunday said if a flood prevention project, dubbed “Bang Rakam Model”, was proved successful in Bang Rakam District, it would be implemented in 30 other flood-plagued provinces and applied to address drought as well.
Yingluck made the comment after her visit to Phitsanulok Province’s Bang Rakam and Tha Nang-ngam Subdisticts to inspect flood situations and distribute necessities to flood victims.
The Thai premier also said the government would consider handing additional assistance to Phitsanulok Province after learning from the Provincial Governor that the province only had 10 million baht left to spend on disaster relief while flood victims living in five districts were still waiting to get some assistance.
On this matter, Yingluck said she had instructed the governor to report a total flood damages in province to the government so that it could work out on the additional assistance.
Furthermore, Yingluck promised to consider proposals for solving flood problem made by local people, which include a proposal to deepen 20 local canals’ beds to 6 meters.
Meanwhile, Thani Thongpakdi, Deputy Director-General the Department of Information under Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Foreign Ministry Sunday ordered Royal Thai embassy in Washington DC and the Royal Thai Consulate General in New York to look after Thai people.
According to the senior official, there are 10,000 Thai people in New York, 5,000 Thai people in Boston and 1,000 Thai people in North Carolina, most of whom are students, businessmen, doctors and restaurateurs.
Thani said no Thai nationals had been affected by the hurricane so far, adding that the Thai consulate-general in New York had asked the networks of Thai people and Thai doctors, the association of Thai people in New York and seven Thai temples in the United States to look after Thai people and arrange them with temporary shelters.
