BANGKOK, August 28 (TNA) - Thai prime minister visits flood-plagued areas in Phitsanulok and Udon Thani Provinces.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sunday began her trip to inspect flood crisis in Phitsanulok Province’s Bang Rakam and Phrom Phiram Districts. The Thai premier was also scheduled to travel to Thailand’s northeastern province of Udon Thani Sunday afternoon.
In Bang Rakam District, Yingluck called a meeting of relevant agencies to discuss long-term solutions to fight floods, saying that there is a need for the district to map out flood-prevention plans as the area is plagued with flooding as well as drought.
The prime minister also met with some 30 families of flood victims who are currently living in temporary roadside shelters to inspect their living conditions.
Regarding Hurricane Irene in the United States, the prime minister said no Thai nationals in the US have been reported affected by the hurricane so far, but she ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to cooperate with US authorities to be prepared to help them.
Floods still prevail in 329 villages in three districts of Phitsanulok Province. Three people have been killed by the flooding. The indurations have also affected some 16,000 families or about 57,000 people, while damaging 26 roads and over 43 square kilometers of farmland.
Meanwhile, Education minister Worawat Ua-apinyakul said several schools have been damaged by flooding, while the Education Ministry planned to seek additional budget from the government to help students. (TNA)
