Thai floods spread to the South
BANGKOK, August 28 (TNA) - Thailand’s floods crisis continued to spread Sunday, with two southern provinces of Pangnga and Ranong suffering from the inundation, forcing many local residents to evacuate.
Rains continued all over in Pangnga Province Saturday night. A soil dam in Rommanee Subdistirct was broken down due to heavy rain and growing water level coming from Khao Sok Mountain adjacent to Surat Thani Province. The broken dam flooded communities and farmland in Muang Takua Pa municipality and nearby areas. Local people were ordered to evacuate out of the area immediately.
In Ranong Province, a landslide completely blocked Highway Number 4005 in Muang Ranong district. It had also damaged a 60-meter-long section of the untreated water pipe network that provides water supply for people in the province. Local authorities expected the pipe repair to take up to seven days.
Meanwhile, water level in rivers in the North and the Northeast kept rising. The water level in Chi River in Ubon Ratchathani Province Sunday rose 13 centimeters above the safe level and people living in low-laying areas in Warin Chamrap and Ubon Ratchathani municipalities were ordered to evacuate their home.
In Phichit Province, the water level in Nan River Sunday rose to over one meter above the safe level while houses in eight localities in Taphanhin District were hit by flash floods from the Phetchabun Mountain range Saturday night. Flood situations also worsened there as large dams were discharging water at faster rates. Over 400 houses were submerged under nearly three-meter deep floodwater. (TNA)
