Doha Launches its Request to Host the 2020 Olympic Games

Doha, August 26 (QNA) - HH the Heir Apparent and Chairman of Qatar Olympic Committee Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani today announced the official launch of the Doha bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games and games of persons with special needs.
Following the confirmation which Qatar Olympic Committee received from President of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge on the flexibility of the date for the organizing of the Olympic Games 2020, HH the Heir Apparent said “in light of the decision taken by President Rogge and the executive office of the International Olympic Committee, I am pleased to officially announce the Doha bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games and games of persons with special needs."
HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said "this decision seems appropriate for the dream represented in the Middle East hosting of the Olympic Games at this time'', adding that Qatar's hosting bid could inspire the settlement of peace in the region which is one of the priorities of our region in which young people represent the majority" . He emphasized that both sport and the Olympic movement teach discipline and collective work, and also help teaching us all the ways and means which empower us to achieve our personal goals.
HH the Heir Apparent and Chairman of Qatar Olympic Committee said "to have an opportunity to enter the bidding race is a step that will move us closer to achieving a very distinctive role to our nation, our region and the Olympic movement."
Meanwhile, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani expressed thanks to the International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge and the International Olympic Committee, " which led us on the road to the Olympic work, and for the support received by Qatar Olympic Committee in order to enable us enter the race for hosting the games without suffering from the preference granted for the date set for hosting the Olympic Games which is usually applicable to our competitors." HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, told the Qatari media delegation while attending the ceremony of raising the flag of the State of Qatar on the Olympic Village on the eve of participation in the 29th Olympic Games, hosted by the Chinese capital during the period from August 8 to 24, 2008 that Qatar intends to apply for hosting the 2020 Summer Olympic Games . Since the exclusion of Qatar's bid to host the 2016 Olympics, Qatar has worked in close association with the family of the International Olympic Committee to remove all the obstacles related to the amendment of the specific date of the Olympic Games set from July 15 to Aug. 31. With the flexibility shown by the International Olympic Committee in this respect, Qatar officially announced its bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
For his part, HE the Secretary General of Qatar Olympic Committee Sheikh Saud bin Abdurrahman Al-Thani said: "We appreciate the understanding shown by the International Olympic Committee and we have heard and learned from our bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games. We have also consulted all international sports federations and we are happy to receive a very positive answer about the date which we proposed. We are delighted that the International Olympic Committee has given us an opportunity to apply for hosting the Games at a date between the 20th of September and the 20th of October, and we know that it will be imperative that we ensure the best conditions for the athletes, the technical staff and the and fans'', adding that the competitions should be programmed to suit the interests of the television transmission "and that is what we will do. "
HE Sheikh Saud said: "Doha has an extensive experience in hosting many international sporting championships, and we are fully committed to continue significant investments in sports and sports facilities.
