New HIV infections fell in Asia-Pacific

BANGKOK, August 26 (TNA) - The United Nations Programme on HIV/Aids (UNAids) reported on Friday that the number of new HIV infections in Asia and the Pacific dropped some 20 per cent from
2001-2009, thanks to regional governments' investment in preventative programs and increased access to antiretroviral medications.

The UNAids said that in Asia alone, the number of new HIV infections dropped from some 450,000 in 2001 to 360,000 in 2009.

However, UNAids Executive Director Michel Sidibe cautioned that countries in the Asian Pacific region should not be complacent, as they are at the crossroads where a growing number of HIV/Aids infections remain among most-at-risk populations although efforts have been made to stop the feared HIV/Aids spreading.(TNA)
