Sakai tribes given Thai ID cards

TRANG, August 25 (TNA) - Thirty-four Sakai tribes residing in southern Thailand’s Trang Province have been issued with Thai ID cards.
Trang Governor Maitree Inthusut presided over the issuance ceremony on Thursday at the Office of the Palian Subdistrict Administrative Organization.
The tribal residents were each christened with the surname “Sri-pa-lian”. They were also each given a bank account, to which welfare allowances from the state would be channeled through.
The Sakai have existed in Ban Khlong Tong village in Palian Subdistrict for over a century, being the longest known tribe to have dwelled in the area among other ethnic groups.
Preserving their traditions, the Sakai people often hunt in the wild, and with most of them still considered stateless and ineligible for public welfare. (TNA)
