Thai Transport Ministry to propose 4 high-speed railways

BANGKOK, August 25 (TNA) - Permanent Secretary for Transport Supoj Saplom says he will propose four high-speed railway projects, linking Bangkok with four other major cities, to new Transport Minister Sukampol Suwannatat for further consideration.

Supoj said the four train lines have a combined distance of 1,280 kilometers, comprising the 600 kilometer Bangkok-Chiang Mai line, the 250 kilometer Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima line, the 250 kilometer Bangkok-Hua Hin line, and 180 kilometer Bangkok-Map Taphut line.

Supoj noted he was confident the government would approve the projects as they were part of the government’s four-year construction plan of five high-speed railway routes worth 800 billion baht, linking Bangkok with Ubon Ratchathani, Chiang Mai, Trat, Nong Khai and the southern Thai border.

Commenting on the Energy Ministry’s resumption of the “Land Bridge” project, Supoj said the plan would help Thailand to become the regional hub of Southeast Asia, as it would link the Andaman coast with the Gulf of Thailand.

He also cited a recent study saying that the land bridge line between Pak Bara port in Satun Province and the Songkhla No. 2 port in Songkhla Province could link up with the envisaged high-speed rail network in China, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. (TNA)
