Thai exports hit new record high in July 2011

BANGKOK, August 25 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce reported on Thursday that the country's exports in July 2011 hit a historic high at 21.52 billion U.S. dollars, a 38.3 per cent year-on-year expansion and striking a new record high from the previous benchmark of 21.26 billion U.S. dollars in March 2011.

Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Puangraj said that shipments of Thai products to overseas markets increased in all categories last month, particularly those of gold frog-leaped by 3,919 per cent while rice and rubber exports surged by 110.6 and 69.3 per cent respectively.

Yanyong acknowledged that Thai exports to all major markets grew by 21.4 per cent on average last month, including those hit by economic woes like Europe, Japan and the Unites States--which expanded by 35.5, 23 and 8.1 per cent year-on-year respectively--while shipments of Thai products to such potential markets as Russia, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Australia grew by 128.7, 47.6 and 38.3 per cent respectively, resulting in Thailand's trade surplus of about 2.80 billion U.S. dollars in July 2011.

According to the senior official said, Thailand's exports during the first seven months of this year stood at 136.50 billion U.S. dollars, a 25.7 per cent surge from the corresponding period of last year, with the country's accumulated trade surplus reaching 6.24 billion U.S. dollars.

The senior Thai Commerce Ministry official assessed, however, that Thailand's total export this year should grow by 15 per cent year-on-year, worth over 200 billion U.S. dollars, as the country's major markets would be facing an economic downturn in the second half of this year. (TNA)
