Many Thai provinces still suffer from floods

BANGKOK, August 25 (TNA) - People in many of Thailand’s northern and northeastern provinces continue to suffer from floods caused by heavy rains in the past several days.

Flashfloods triggered by torrential rains hit central Chaiyaphum province Wednesday night, sinking several roads and houses. The local people were forced to relocate their belongings to high grounds, while many schools were ordered closed.

The local municipality distributed sandbags to the local people, while more water pumps were being installed around Muang Chaiyaphum district to speed up drainage.

In Yasothon province, the Chi River overflowed its banks, flooding nearby houses and schools. Rising waters prompted teachers and students to begin moving important equipment on to higher grounds.

In Sukhothai province, the Yom River water remained above the safe level. Highway roads were submerged by up to 60-80 centimeter high floodwaters, which also affected many government buildings, hospitals and schools.

Authorities also declared three more districts in Pichit province as disaster zones, while over 10,000 families in five other districts were still affected from prevailing floodwaters.

In the central plains, the flood situation in Prachin Buri province worsened following Wednesday night’s rainstorm, with the Prachin Buri River overflowing into riverside communities in Sri Mahapho and Ban Sang districts. (TNA)
