Japan to Fully Lift Beef Cattle Shipment Ban

Tokyo, Aug. 25 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government plans to fully remove a ban Thursday on beef cattle shipments, which has been in place due to concern about possible radioactive contamination, sources familiar with the matter said.
The government introduced the shipment ban last month on beef cows raised in the northeastern prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima and the eastern prefecture of Tochigi due to reports of contamination with radioactive cesium from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.
It lifted the ban in Miyagi on Friday.
Beef cattle raised in the remaining prefectures will be shipped once the safety is confirmed.
The government initially planned to lift the ban in Fukushima on Friday as well. But the plan was postponed after the discovery of contaminated beef from cows shipped from a local farmer.
