Skier found dead on Vic's Mount Feathertop
A skier found dead on Mount Feathertop in Victoria's northeast was likely to have fallen down an embankment.
The man's body was located on the southeast side of the mountain, the state's second-highest, in the Alpine National Park about 1.20pm (AEST) on Wednesday, police said.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man appeared to have come off his skis and gone down an embankment.
"There was an off-duty ski patrol person who was first to the scene and he couldn't get a pulse, and when we arrived we confirmed he was deceased," Mr Mullen said.
The body was found near the Razorback North walking track.
Owner of the Feathertop Alpine Lodge, John Alcorn, said cross-country skiers used the mountain.
"It is quite a trip to get out to Mount Feathertop, so someone must have planned it and been out there cross country skiing.
"It is not the sort of place you could go out to for a day trip and then come back," Mr Alcorn said.
Mount Feathertop is known for its alpine hiking trails and in August 2009 Victoria's then water minister Tim Holding had a mishap on the mountain and became lost for two nights before he was winched to safety by a helicopter.
