Thai army chief justifies solutions on southern unrest

BANGKOK, August 24 (TNA) - Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha says security operations in Thailand’s three southern border provinces are justified, and only aim to protect civilian lives and their assets.

General Prayuth made the assurance on Wednesday, saying the overall situation in the provinces had improved despite continuing violence causing unnecessary loss of lives.

He explained that the aggression resulted from many factors including vested interest, illicit trade, local politics, insurgency groups, and importantly historical and local ethnic conflicts.

However, the Thai Army Chief assured authorities had always refrained from forceful measures, saying the problem must be addressed every dimension, and that the use of force by authorities would only trigger violent responses. (TNA)
