Thailand opens “Longan Festival 2011“

BANGKOK, August 24 (TNA) - The Department of Agricultural Extension, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, is holding a Longan festival this week in bid to help farmers expand their market.

Deputy Director-General of Agricultural Extension Kamol Kasemsuk opened the “Longan Festival 2011” on Wednesday at his department, drawing the participation of foreign ambassadors in Thailand--besides linking up producers and commercial networks.

The trade fair, running from August 24-26, would aim to help alleviate the problem with low prices of Longans, due to the oversupply of the fruit during the July-August period.

Longan was regarded as one of Thailand’s top commodity fruits, generating a yearly export income of some 6 billion baht, with Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe listed as the country’s main export markets. (TNA)
