INDONESIA AND BRAZIL STRENGTHEN COOPERATION IN AGRICULTURE

Jakarta, Sept 19 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Brazil, two countries with an advanced agricultural sector, solidified their commitment to enhancing cooperation in research and agricultural development.

An official release of the Foreign Ministry, made available to Antara here on Friday, said the enhanced cooperation would be specified in a technical arrangement which would include cooperation in research, development, and dissemination of soybean (genetic evaluation, technical production development, disease and pest eradication, post harvest assessment).
In addition, the cooperation also included research in Jatropha, sugarcane, livestock and other sectors.
The commitment for increased cooperation was conveyed during the visit of an Indonesian delegation of the Agriculture Ministry to Brazil this week.
The visit was reported a follow up of Indonesian Agriculture Minister's visit to that country in March 2008.
During the agriculture minister's visit to that country, the cooperation between the two countries on agriculture-related genetics, bio-technology, biological security, pest-handling facilities, and development of transgenic eucaluptus seedling, sugarcane, cutton and corn were also discussed.
The ministers also exchanged views on potential cooperation in technological transfer in the building of an ethanol industry and import of "halal" (allowed in Islam) meat.
The Indonesian government during the visit also proposed a cooperation in soybean technological development especially in the exchange of genetic materials, land use technlogy and the development of human resources.
