MONGOLIA-KOREA JOINT STATEMENT RELEASED

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ A joint statement of Mongolia and the Republic of Korea was released on Monday, August 22, in Ulaanbaatar city.
The joint statement states that the President of the Republic of Korean Lee Myung-bak paid a state visit to Mongolia on August 21-23, at an invitation of his counterpart of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj. Mr. Lee has been warmly received by the Mongolian state authorities and people.
During the visit, the Presidents of the countries held negotiations. The dignitaries shared views on development direction of the bilateral relations, strengthening the objective cooperation, regional and international issues including the matter on Korean peninsula, and then reached a common understanding on these issues. The Prime Minister and the Parliament Speaker of Mongolia were received by the State Head of the Republic of Korea.
The sides expressed their satisfaction with widening of the bilateral relations and cooperation in the fields of politics, economics, trade, culture, education and humanity at regional and international arenas, based on the Principles of Good Neighborhood, Friendship and Cooperation Partnership. They agreed to develop the bilateral cooperation in all sectors in accordance with the Principle of Comprehensive Partnership, and then established a middle-term program on the Mongolia-Korea cooperation reflecting the priorities of the collaboration.
In conjunction with intensive development of the bilateral relations' content, the two countries agreed with a necessity to create an intergovernmental permanent consultative mechanism in order to promote effectiveness of the cooperation and to ensure the unified regulation of it. They will study a form and frequency of the consultative mechanism.
The countries reached an agreement to widen the bilateral cooperation in the defense sector.
Mr. Lee expressed a willingness to render support to Mongolia for strengthening democracy and developing the market economics.
Moreover, the sides agreed to implement a cooperation agreement on the civil air transportation sector and increasing frequency of direct flights with a purpose to facilitate the mutual visit of people of the countries.
In accordance with a bilateral agreement, the countries will seek positive opportunities to render assistance to Mongolian studies in the South Korea, and Korean studies in Mongolia. In addition to it, the sides have underlined an importance of events of the Korean Year in Mongolia as well as Mongolian Year in Korea organized in a scope of the 20th anniversary of the bilateral diplomatic relations.
The Mongolian side appreciated a dialogue of the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held in Bali, Indonesia, and informed that Mongolia supports effort of the South Korea to resume the talks on tackling the nuclear program of Korean peninsula. Mongolia and the Republic of Korea said they concerned over the program of the DPRK for uranium enrichment as well.
The Korean side promised to study a request of Mongolia to join the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Then, Mongolia has expressed its willingness to participate in the East Asia Summit.
Mr. Lee expressed his thanks to the Mongolian state and people for a warm welcome, and invited the Mongolian President to visit the Republic of Korea. Ts.Elbegdorj thankfully received the invitation.
