Thai supreme commander agrees to follow instructions from border observers

BANGKOK, August 23 (TNA) - Thai Armed Forces Chief General Songkitti Jagabatara has affirmed his readiness to comply with government orders regarding the deployment of Indonesian observers along the Thai-Cambodian border as ordered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 18.
The supreme commander’s remark was seen as a reverse to his strong opposition to the deployment of third-party observers in the disputed area near the Preah Vihear temple earlier.
General Songkitti admitted he personally believed the deployment of military observers and the entry ban on Thai troops to the demilitarised zone, which belonged to the Thai territory, was tantamount to the violation of the country’s sovereignty.
Asked if the ICJ’s provisional demilitarized zone order hindered aerial patrol operations of the Royal Thai Air Force, General Songkitti said aerial patrols would be conducted only within the Thai territory, noting that the three branches of Thai armed forces would only carry out national defense plans approved by the cabinet.
