Thai EC hands out "red card" to former deputy interior minister

BANGKOK, August 23 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) resolved on Tuesday to hand out a "red card" to former deputy interior minister Boonjong Wongtrairat of the oppostion Bhumjaithai Party for violating electoral laws.

Somchai Juengprasert, an election commissioner tasked with investigations on electoral complaints, told reporters after an EC meeting that the decision was made with the majority vote of 3:2.

Somchai said that the former deputy interior minister in the previous Democrat Party-led coalition government was found guilty of breaching the Thai electoral laws by participating in a banquet for community leaders in his constituency in Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima Province during a by-election campaign in the wake of the country's latest general election on July 3.

The election commissioner revealed that his election agency will forward the case to the Supreme Court's electoral department for further testimony and a final verdict, saying that Boonjong would be deprived from his MP status if the Supreme Court ruled against him, as requested by the Thai EC.
