Thailand to develop underground energy sources

BANGKOK, August 23 (TNA) - The Thai government has joined forces with PTT Public Company Limited (PTT), the country's largest state-supported petroleum firm, to explore underground thermal energy sources to be used for "green power production" in the future.

Chiefs of the Thai Ministry of Energy's Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency and Department of Groundwater Resources, Krirerk Nilkuha and Praneet Roybang, signed an agreement on the new energy cooperation project, on behalf of the Thai government, with PTT President Prasert Bunsumpun in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Krirerk said that under the project, aimed to ensure Thailand's energy security and to promote widely use of alternatively-clean energy in the Kingdom to ease the global warming problem, the trio will jointly assess and explore the potential of underground thermal energy sources and will study various technologies to be used for the underground thermal energy exploration and development, if considered most appropriate, over the next two years, and that any discovered thermal energy source will be used for power production.

Meanwhile, the PTT president revealed that PTT, tasked with ensuring Thailand's sustainable energy sources and supporting clean energy development and investment projects, will inject a 200-million-baht fund to sponsor the new tripartite project, expected to be focused in the Thai North. (TNA)
