Thai agricultural industry expected to grow 3% in 2011

BANGKOK, August 23 (TNA) - Secretary General of the Office of Agricultural Economics Apichart Jongsakul says he expects the Thai agricultural industry to grow at a slower pace of 3 percent this year, from the earlier projection at 4 percent, given impacts from the global economic slump as well as floods which occurred earlier this year.

Apichart said Thai agricultural exports in the first half of 2011 were heavily hit by the global economic slump, particularly pineapple juice and rubber exports to the U.S. and China respectively, adding that the downward shift in global demand also affected the market price of Thai agricultural exports.

Furthermore, Apichart said this year’s flooding also heavily hit the country’s rice production, which caused a dip in the Thai agricultural industry in the third quarter of 2011.

The secretary general of agricultural economics noted the slump in the agricultural industry would affect the overall Thai GDP growth projected by the National Economic and Social Development Board as well. (TNA)
