Over 1.1 million people affected by floods in Thailand

BANGKOK, August 23 (TNA) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation says over 1.1 million people across Thailand have so far been affected by latest flood crisis.

According to the official report, floodwaters still occupied 14 Thai provinces, including seven in the central region, three each in the north and northeast, and one in the east, while over 3,200 square kilometers of farmland had reportedly been damaged.

In Prachin Buri, five districts remain inundated, causing local people to take shelter in makeshift tents.

In Ang Thong, rising waters in the Chao Phraya river prompted the Chao Phraya Dam to discharge more water downstream. The level of floodwater in many downstream villages of Tambon Phong Pheng locality rose by about 5 centimeters from its level on Monday.

The Nan River also exceeded its maximum safety level by nearly 1 meter in central Phichit Province.

Some 500 households were also hit by a recent flashflood from the Phetchabun mountain range.

However, the Irrigation Department confirmed the overall flood situation was improving, noting that floods in the north were slowly receding from lower rainfall. The department said however, it expected another monsoon to drift through the Thai north and northeast from September 25 to 29. (TNA)
