New Thai government urged to liaise with BOT

BANGKOK, August 22 (TNA) - Thailand's opposition Democrat Party has urged the new Pheu Thai Party-led government to quickly discuss and work together with the Bank of Thailand (BOT) on the country's fiscal and financial policy framework to uphold confidence in the Thai economy among international traders and investors.

Acting Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva suggested that aligned stands between the Thai government and the central bank be concluded, through their discussions, prior to public announcements, and that the new Pheu Thai Party-led administration pay attention to impacts on the Thai economy and the country's inflation from the ongoing debt crisis in the United States and Europe and from its own populist economic policies.

The former premier in the previous Thai government also voiced his opposition to the new administration's plan to draw out part of the country's foreign exchange reserves for investment in public projects through a proposed national wealth fund, saying that the state coffer should be maintained and legally regulated to protect the national economy and to sustain the national economic strength in the long run.

The former Democrat Thai premier vowed that his opposition camp will represent the Thai public to question and "counter-check" the new government's policies at parliamentary sessions, beginning from a joint parliamentary sitting on the new government's policy presentation on August 23.

The opposition leader also brushed aside new Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul's reported move to file a judicial case against the Democrat Party for an alleged false statement on his involvement in Japan's recent decision on granting a special visa to convicted ex-Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, insisting that the opposition will keep on scrutinizing the government's policies for the public.
